01 Aug Fermented Dill Pickles

Do ya love a good pickle?? I'm not talking vinegar pickles, I'm talking amazingly tangy, crisp and probiotic pickles you can make at home. People ask me all the time to share with them fermenting recipes and while I prefer to coach people through the process because there are so many things you can do to stuff it up, I have shared one with you today. Dill pickles are one of the simplest ferments to have a go trying. When fermented right, dill pickles are teaming with probiotics and can be a great pre-dinner or lunch snack to get the digestive juices flowing in preparation for digestion and to repopulate the beneficial bacteria. Hopefully this will help give you confidence to give it a try. Please feel free to comment over at you tube or below if you have any other questions. Its pretty simple though so I hope you have a go. Give it a go and give me a tag (#happyguts) so I can join in your journey.   [embed_popupally_pro popup_id="10"]...

Herbs n spices2

26 Jun Herbs, Spices + Your Microbiome

Don’t you hate it when a food looks really good in a restaurant or at a friends house… until you take a bite and it’s bland and needs a bit of flavour? I think we have all been there. Sometimes all you need is a pinch of salt, a sprinkle of cinnamon or a dash of fresh herbs. I’m constantly reaching for herbs and spices to pimp my food. I want my food to sing, crunch, pop, sizzle, full of spice and all things nice. Why? Because herbs and spices not only add flavour but they add extra nutrients and healthy properties to boost any meal. They are small but mighty and your mircobiome loves them.  If I am honest, there are numerous veggies I’m not crazy about but when they are slathered and hidden in among flavours you are going to be more inclined to eat not only the veg you don’t like but more veggies in general. The most common excuse for not eating brussel sprouts is because boiled sprouts are gross!! I totally agree. But lathered in ghee, sprinkled with smoked paprika and roasted they are one of my fav winter veggies. Learning to introduce herbs and spices will open you...

22 Nov Dying for blemish free glowing skin?

Skin troubles?? Just a few years ago I would have dyed to have blemish free radiant skin, but I didn't. A piece of my self confidence died every time I looked in the mirror. It was a 2 year journey for me and it sucked!!! Being the big old hippy that I am, I was determined to overcome my acne holistically so I persisted with organic face creams and home remedies but nothing topical helped. I wasted countless hours obsessively staring (and shamelessly I admit to picking) at my skin in the mirror, which made me feel even worse about my appearance. Having healthy glowing skin is an expression of your inner health and I was eating an amazing diet which was disheartening, I felt like a closet eater but I wasn’t. I just didn’t get why I had such bad skin and I was getting to the point of desperation and also because covering up acne was getting expensive. (If you are struggling you know what I mean… there is never enough foundation to cover. Never. Then you have over done it and you have to take it all off again and re-apply! Argh… makeup was a chore to say the least). After living with...

Cravings2

01 Mar Cravings, why you can’t rely on will power.

Cravings require more than will power. You’re hungry, its 3pm and you are craving a sweet treat… a brownie!! Loaded with sugar and gluten and you know you shouldn’t… but you eat it anyway and blame will power. I’ve been there. Although it would have been a red bull and a muffin. At the time it was my poison, but not these days… I couldn’t think of anything worse. I hate the term will power. It is a load of crap. It has never worked for me and people are so disheartened when they are failed by their own will power. I read so many health blogs with suggestions to curb cravings… but frankly they don’t help. Understanding why you are craving something helps to make an educated decision to either surrender to the craving or overpower it. I’ve been on the tail end where the cravings were soooo strong it would literally change my mood. I would be irritable, distracted and every thought would be figuring out how and when I would surrender to my cravings. This happens because your body is screaming out for something. It is craving something. In most cases it’s got something to do with your gut bugs. The bacteria in your gut (aka...
