01 Aug Fermented Dill Pickles

Do ya love a good pickle?? I'm not talking vinegar pickles, I'm talking amazingly tangy, crisp and probiotic pickles you can make at home. People ask me all the time to share with them fermenting recipes and while I prefer to coach people through the process because there are so many things you can do to stuff it up, I have shared one with you today. Dill pickles are one of the simplest ferments to have a go trying. When fermented right, dill pickles are teaming with probiotics and can be a great pre-dinner or lunch snack to get the digestive juices flowing in preparation for digestion and to repopulate the beneficial bacteria. Hopefully this will help give you confidence to give it a try. Please feel free to comment over at you tube or below if you have any other questions. Its pretty simple though so I hope you have a go. Give it a go and give me a tag (#happyguts) so I can join in your journey.   [embed_popupally_pro popup_id="10"]...

23 May Don’t reach for that Vitamin C this winter

I finally get to use this line from Game of Thrones because "Winter Is Coming" (insert theme song here). Luckily down-under we don't have to deal with severe winters, Australia has pretty mild winters and I consider ourselves lucky, because I'm not a fan of the cold. But just like the rest of the world we still get sick down here because there is a change in season and every year there is talk of the flu vaccine (which you could not force me to get even if you offered me a bagillion dollars) and I love observing how people almost proudly comparing how their cold was worse than yours or visa versa. Have you ever noticed this phenomenon? I remember as a kid having a cough or a runny nose and mum would make me take some vitamin c or drink some orange juice or have an orange. God bless her… she was only doing what was the norm and pretty much everyone still does this today when they feel a cold coming on. But the truth is that taking vitamin C when you start to feel unwell has no preventative measures once you are actually sick. Every year (around winter) you...

24 Jan Gut Soothing Smoothies

If you are anything like me after the xmas festivities are over, I'm craving the sweet stuff (because of the extra indulging over the holidays) but also I tend to drink way more alcohol because there are heaps more occasions to do so. Craving wine of an evening is a way I tend to 'hang on' to the holiday vibes… even though I’m back at work. The indulging needs to stop at some stage because it can be damaging to your gut if you have had issues in the past (like me) or if you are going through some gut issues. Getting back on track as quick as possible is super important. Smoothies are a great breakfast, morning tea or afternoon snack because you can load them with amazing gut healing superfoods and supplements to help heal and seal your gut quick-stat, because they are ‘blended’ the food is already partially broken down making the process easier on your digestion. Below I have some of my all-time summer favourites to help with the mid-morning hunger or the 3:30 cravings. They are designed to have a hint of sweetness to satisfy the sweet tooth but also loaded with fiber and veg to keep you regular...

Dont like your veggies2

11 Jun Dont like your veggies? Try these easy and flavourful cooking tips.

I used to push my veggies aside, or have the SMALLEST portion and call it "healthy". Does this sound like you? Are you seriously lacking some love for your 2 + 5 a day? Then I've got a treat for your taste buds. Its time to learn to pimp your veggies. Stop boiling them or baking without flavour, food is way to enjoyable to ruin a good thing. I’m a real veg and meat kinda girl (not the other way around). I rarely feel uninspired for dinner because I’m obsessed with flavour. My meals are never bland and if anything I over flavor. This was one of the cooking lessons I learnt that made me fall in love with veg. Learning to cook a proper curry inspired me. You can turn a tin of tomatoes into the most flavourful rich and exciting dish just with herbs and spices...

05 Oct Cacao + Dandi Smoothie

Trying to get a daily dose of prebiotics can be difficult sometimes, so I am always experimenting ways to incorporate them into my diet. Dandelion root is a great herb that will assist digestion and aid good gut health. It stimulates digestion by acting as a milk laxative, it also assists the liver in detoxing, feeds the good bacteria in your gut and is also high in antioxidants. Dandelion root can be found in most supermarkets as a tea. Or if you are a herb nerd you can find it at some special health food stores, online or bulk/loose produce stores. Dandelion root is a great coffee alternative as it has a similar taste to coffee (but not as strong) and caffeine free. Tahini is sesame seed paste and has an amazing flavour, i love adding it to my smoothies for some healthy fats as well as the added calcium, iron and magnesium. It is classed as a healthy fat and works really well with cacao flavoured foods. Cacao is the raw unprocessed "cocoa" powder. It is not the same as cocoa, cocoa is roasted or heat treated so it loses some of its amazing benefits. Cacao is a superfood and contains magnesium, small traces of...
