28 Mar Gut Health 101 + Why You Should Care

What does the whole gut health thing actually mean?

I know it can be confusing because it seems like there is a new superfood or a new diet each week that is the most amazing health hack… then you find out a week or month later that it was all just a load of BS and there was just a bit of hype around it, take kale for example… about a year ago if you mentioned you eat a healthy diet or are interested in your health it was ALLLLLL about the kale.

(To be brutally honest, I’m not a big fan of kale unless its cooked and wilted… can’t stand it raw or in salads YUCK!! But I have managed to find a way to consume it and it’s not as often as you might think)


I am not sure if you have noticed but there is a lot of talk and hype around gut health lately and I really hope it doesn’t start to cheapen the importance of gut health or bring out the haters. So I want to share a little about why it’s so important.

The thing with gut health that no one really talks about is the fact that not everyone is the same. We are all at different levels of our wellness journey. Some people work well by tweaking a few things where’s other people might need the whole gut healing protocol and need a step by step plan of attack. Gut healing requires a trial and error type of approach, unless you have the money to get some tests done. However there seem to be 3 contributing factors across the board we can look at.

There are 3 main concerns when it comes to gut health, know which one affects you and you can tweak your approach.

1)      Leaky gut – is an abbreviation for “intestinal permeability” which is when the gut lining becomes damaged and remains open. Leaky gut can be the cause for autoimmune diseases because it impairs your immune system, cause food intolerances because it lets food into the blood, impaired hormone health (stress, mood and reproductive), poor nutrient absorption, skin issues (acne, dandruff, psoriasis and eczema) anxiety and mood issues… you name it, it usually comes back to having a leaky gut. Diet is a major contributor to leaky gut so cleaning up your diet is a good place to start.

2)      SIBO – short for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. You need to have bacteria in your small intestine but not much, when bacteria species from the large intestine over grow and encroach the small intestine you can have an overgrowth of bacteria that cause havoc and are very hard to control. This can lead to nutrient deficiencies and cause a leaky gut. Uncomfortable bloating, gas, burping, low stomach acid, constipation and diarrhea are the most common symptoms… which are very much digestive upset symptoms.

3)      Candida overgrowth – candida is a yeast that when it takes over it takes over with force. It feeds on food sugars and starches and can literally destroy your gut. Candida generally overgrows when there is not enough beneficial bacteria to keep it in check. When you take antibiotics it can kill off the beneficial bacteria or other medications such as taking the pill can also cause an upset in the beneficial Bactria. However a really unhealthy diet with little to no veggies is enough to cause an overgrowth. When candida feed off diatary sugars in dairy, grains, starches and sugar it  produces toxic by-products that destroy your gut lining, interfere with your hormones, brain fog, skin issues and much more. it’s a little bugger to get rid of and could be the root cause of your confusing symptoms.


Figuring out what type of issue you might be dealing with will help you understand how to treat your gut. Each require a different approach but getting to the root cause can mean gaining control back and achieving amazing gut health.


Nurturing your gut health is so important because you can suffer all sorts of uncomfortable symptoms anything from dandruff, acne, eczema, farting, bloating, anxiety, headaches, low energy, hormonal issues, infertility and much much more… Imagine living a life free of these horrible issues?

THAT’S what it means to have good gut health.

So now hopefully that clears up why we are all gut lovin over here at welcoming wellness. Having a healthy gut is the fastest way to achieving wellness. Heal your gut and you will set yourself free of those nasty symptoms and issues that rule your day, your life and even manifest as disease later on in life if left untreated.
