12 Sep Aloe Vera, the medicinal gut healer internally and externally.

Aloe Vera is (as you know) a plant, it’s resilient, great for sunburns but also amazing for gut health and skin care!! Since I struggled with acne and skin scarring aloe has always been a medicinal staple for me both internally and externally… but you may not know how good it is for your gut and digestion so let me divulge. If you follow me on instagram (@welcomingwellness) you will know I recently moved and have been posting some of my gardening antics. I Have not only been freaking out (in a good way) over the added space but also freaking out about the fact that I have a small patch of lawn to ground myself on daily… eeeek so exciting because I have been a city slicker for close to a decade. Since moving from the city I realised I had seriously neglected my aloe vera plant and it was looking a bit sad and trying to escape from the pot… literally. So it was time to get my hands dirty and do some gardening, find a bigger pot for my aloe babies. There are 2 things you should know with aloe vera… it’s hard to kill and it should...

01 Aug Fermented Dill Pickles

Do ya love a good pickle?? I'm not talking vinegar pickles, I'm talking amazingly tangy, crisp and probiotic pickles you can make at home. People ask me all the time to share with them fermenting recipes and while I prefer to coach people through the process because there are so many things you can do to stuff it up, I have shared one with you today. Dill pickles are one of the simplest ferments to have a go trying. When fermented right, dill pickles are teaming with probiotics and can be a great pre-dinner or lunch snack to get the digestive juices flowing in preparation for digestion and to repopulate the beneficial bacteria. Hopefully this will help give you confidence to give it a try. Please feel free to comment over at you tube or below if you have any other questions. Its pretty simple though so I hope you have a go. Give it a go and give me a tag (#happyguts) so I can join in your journey.   [embed_popupally_pro popup_id="10"]...

26 Jun Herbs, Spices + Your Microbiome

Don’t you hate it when a food looks really good in a restaurant or at a friends house… until you take a bite and it’s bland and needs a bit of flavour? I think we have all been there. Sometimes all you need is a pinch of salt, a sprinkle of cinnamon or a dash of fresh herbs. I’m constantly reaching for herbs and spices to pimp my food. I want my food to sing, crunch, pop, sizzle, full of spice and all things nice. Why? Because herbs and spices not only add flavour but they add extra nutrients and healthy properties to boost any meal. They are small but mighty and your mircobiome loves them.  If I am honest, there are numerous veggies I’m not crazy about but when they are slathered and hidden in among flavours you are going to be more inclined to eat not only the veg you don’t like but more veggies in general. The most common excuse for not eating brussel sprouts is because boiled sprouts are gross!! I totally agree. But lathered in ghee, sprinkled with smoked paprika and roasted they are one of my fav winter veggies. Learning to introduce herbs and spices will open you...

23 May Don’t reach for that Vitamin C this winter

I finally get to use this line from Game of Thrones because "Winter Is Coming" (insert theme song here). Luckily down-under we don't have to deal with severe winters, Australia has pretty mild winters and I consider ourselves lucky, because I'm not a fan of the cold. But just like the rest of the world we still get sick down here because there is a change in season and every year there is talk of the flu vaccine (which you could not force me to get even if you offered me a bagillion dollars) and I love observing how people almost proudly comparing how their cold was worse than yours or visa versa. Have you ever noticed this phenomenon? I remember as a kid having a cough or a runny nose and mum would make me take some vitamin c or drink some orange juice or have an orange. God bless her… she was only doing what was the norm and pretty much everyone still does this today when they feel a cold coming on. But the truth is that taking vitamin C when you start to feel unwell has no preventative measures once you are actually sick. Every year (around winter) you...
